Epic Day of Service with Zero Waste Vashon

Join Vashon Nature Center, Zero Waste Vashon, and Vashon Rotary on May 16th for our joint Epic Day of Service! Volunteers will be helping remove tires and other marine garbage from Jensen Point to improve our local environment and ecosystems for native wildlife. 

Between now and the May 16th Epic Day of Service, we are also asking the community help Zero Waste Vashon map the half-buried tires at low tide, dig them up, and move them to Jensen Point. Tires can also be simply located, dug up, and report them so Zero Waste Vashon can transport them to Jensen Point by boat or truck.

Beach tires are an environmental hazard, emitting toxins that can kill fish and other aquatic lifeforms. Last year, over 50 volunteers removed 542 pounds of beach trash, as well as 127 intertidal tires, by boat and truck; King County Solid Waste then picks up and recycles the tires! This year, efforts are already underway thanks to efforts by Harbor School students and other community members.

Date and time: May 16th, 2026 9:00 – 3:00 PM (this is the culminating event, with preceding activities leading up to it)

Location: Jensen Point. Beach clean-up can occur anywhere on the island. Deliver recovered tires and marine debris to the staging area just north of the Jensen Pt boat ramp.
