Gray Whale Ambassador Training Workshop
Share your love for whales! Sign up for Vashon Nature Center’s 3-part whale ambassador training workshop! Created for the whale enthusiasts who want to learn about gray whales and educate about Singer, the gray whale’s sculpture, this training is open to anyone. Our goal is to train and recruit a team of knowledgeable volunteers who will stand by Singer’s sculpture in VCA’s atrium and tell Singer’s story. Answering questions from the public to educate them further about gray whales and ocean conservation will be the volunteers’ main priority!
This combined zoom and in-person training will teach all about gray whale anatomy, biology, behavior, and conservation! Participants will learn Singer’s story in detail, get to know the exhibit space, and learn positive interpretation techniques for engaging the public. Come and learn from Vashon Nature Center science and education staff with invited guest speakers.

Cost requirement: Free, donations of any kind gladly accepted!
Accessibility limitations: No accessibility restrictions. Participants will meet in person for the training in the atrium and interact with the public.
Gear/experience requirements: This course aims to create a knowledgeable team capable of answering the public’s questions and inspiring awe about the “Singer” whale sculpture. We ask participants to volunteer at least 10 hours at the sculpture in 2026-2027.
Training dates:
May 28th 7-8 pm via Zoom: whale biology, behavior, anatomy, climate implications.
June 4th- 7-8:30 pm via Zoom: Singer’s story- hear from the artist Ela Lamblin, Cascadia Research who conducted the necropsy and more.
June 6th, 10-12, in person at VCA: Interpretation Space and Techniques- learn techniques for positive, informative sharing with the public and become familiar with the sculpture space and the accompanying interpretive exhibit.
