Beaches

Our diverse work on beaches of Vashon-Maury are helping highlight the islands’ natural shorelines as a regionally important ecological resource. Island beaches form half the shoreline existing in King County, and host major forage fish spawning locations. Salmon born as far away as the Stillaguamish River have been documented feeding along our shores

Cliff Birds

Pigeon Guillemots are the “canaries in the coal mine” of Puget Sound health. We monitor these social, playful seabirds from June through August while they nest in cliff burrows and gather fish from nearshore waters to feed their young. Along with key partners from the Vashon-Maury Island and Whidbey Island Audubon chapters, we contribute our observations to an expanding pool of data from around Puget Sound that is helping us to understand the life habits and ranges of these important (and frankly adorable) birds.
