Environmental Justice and Equity: Talks on the Rock with Emily Pinckney

Environmental Justice

This talk is part of the Natural Wonder Talks on the Rock series co-hosted by Vashon Nature Center and Vashon Center for the Arts.

Since Emily was 3, growing up along the Salish Sea in Tacoma, she knew that she loved the ocean. When she’s not working as a marine biologist, dancer, and choreographer, she mentors youth and works tirelessly for environmental justice.

Emily Pinckney’s experience as an underrepresented scientist led her to advocate for environmental justice and equity principles and to educate underserved communities on how to navigate around systemic barriers.

With degrees from Humboldt State University and Duke University, and serving on the WA state Environmental Justice Task Force, Sustainable Tacoma Commission, 500 Women Scientists, and the South Sound Urban League Young Professionals, Emily is a force to know. She is currently the Youth Coordinator for Pt. Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.
